The words “make me an instrument” have been my prayer on repeat lately. I have clung to it when words and energy fall short…a resuscitation of old words that resound my desire to bring goodness and truth to every area of my life.
To be an instrument. Not the doer, but the means by which. A screwdriver may do work, but it is powerless on the tool bench without an actor. A piano may produce melodious sounds, but without the pianist it is just a piece of furniture. I want to be an instrument in the hands of God. Reaching to new places, as an accessible tool for God to do big work. Check out St. Francis of Assisi’s original Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace passage and stay tuned for parent, spouse, friend, and worker verses.
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
This passage stands strong by itself, applicable to all of life’s situations, but sometimes I need more clear images and examples. I hope these new verses can offer you more meditation on St. Francis’ beautiful words.
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there are sticky fingers, let me sow love . Where there is broken china, pardon; when there are big questions, faith; where there are diaper explosions, hope; where there are monsters under the bed, light; where there are crocodile tears, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be right as to affirm; to be listened to as to listen; to be flattered as to flatter; For it is in washing our spouse’s feet that we are washed; it is in forgiving mistakes that we are forgiven; it is in doing the dishes that we are born again to eternal life.
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is insecurity, let me sow love . Where there are forgotten texts, pardon; when there are times of confusion, faith; where there are impossible circumstances, hope; where there are deep rooted lies, light; where there is disappoint, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be recognized as to recognize others; to be successful as to lead with service; to be honored as to be honorable; For it is in building up others that we are stronger; it is in offering the benefit of the doubt that we are trusted; it is in working with integrity that we are born again to eternal life.
I encourage you to make your own verse of this prayer. Leave it in the comments here, if you so desire. Let us go and be instruments, not limiting God’s work through us, in any place or role of our life.
